Cook: What Apple CEO Tim Cook has to say on ChatGPT, AI technology and its regulation – Times of India

0

Apple executives, including Tim Cook, may not have used the buzzword ‘AI’ during the entire WWDC 2023 presentation but the company’s chief executive officer is reportedly keeping a close watch on the developments in this space.
Cook has a different view on the ‘AI features’ in Apple products but he echoed the general understanding on the growing technology. In an interview with news publication ABC, Cook said that Apple clearly integrates AI into its products today, however, the general public doesn’t necessarily think about those features as AI.

Tim Cook uses ChatGPT
While responding to a question whether he has the ChatGPT app on his iPhone, Cook said that he uses ChatGPT, the AI chatbot developed by OpenAI, and is excited about the tool’s “unique applications.” He added that the company is looking at ChatGPT closely.
His statements came a day after Apple announced several features for its products at its annual developer conference, WWDC 2023.
Some of the features for the iPhone, iPad and Mac are powered by machine learning. For example, Apple announced that it uses machine learning for autocorrect and dictation in messaging. It also uses the next-gen technology in comprehensive facial recognition features for identifying friends, family and pets in photos.

AI companies must regulate themselves
Cook also opened about the potential and dangers that AI poses on humanity. He said that large language models (LLMs) show “great promise” but also the potential for “things like bias, things like misinformation [and] maybe worse in some cases.”
He emphasised that there is a need for regulation and guardrails. “If you look down the road, then it’s so powerful that companies have to employ their own ethical decisions,” Cook said.
“Regulation will have a difficult time staying even with the progress on this because it’s moving so quickly. So I think it’s incumbent on companies as well to regulate themselves,” the Apple CEO added.
