Comeback man Murali Vijay looks to enjoy cricket again | Cricket News – Times of India

CHENNAI: The sixth edition of the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) — to be held from June 23 till July 31 — will see the return of opener Murali Vijay into competitive cricket after a gap of almost two years. The 38-year-old, who last featured during the 2020 IPL season for the Chennai Super Kings, will be padding up for the Ruby Trichy Warriors during the TNPL.
On the reasons for him to be staying away from the game for such a long period of time, Vijay — during a TNPL function on Saturday — pointed out, “I wanted to play but I had a few injuries. Also my personal life was going through a fast pace and I wanted to slow it down. I wanted to see where as an individual I am standing, and that’s why I felt the break at that point of time was required. Luckily, TNCA has been very supportive and they understood my situation and have given me the platform (via TNPL) to come back and play.”
Vijay, who has been training for the last few weeks, is keen to hit the ground running. “I am very excited to be playing this season of the TNPL. I am enjoying cricket, feeling fit and looking to play the game for as long as possible,” he said. TNPL has roped in Giggr Technologies to take a big leap in digitalizing the tournament. The opener will see defending champions Chepauk Super Gillies taking on Nellai Royal Kings in Tirunelveli.
Vijay, who last featured for the national side in the Perth Test of the tour of Australia in 2018-19, isn’t setting any targets whatsoever. “I don’t have any aims at the moment. I just want to enjoy this space of my life and see where it takes me,” said Vijay, who has played 61 Tests, 17 ODIs and 9 T20s for India.
Vijay is keen to help the youngsters realise their potential through this tournament. “TNPL is a gift for Tamil Nadu cricket. I am keen to go out and perform. I also want to make use of this opportunity to rub shoulders with the youngsters and help them to realise their potential,” Vijay said.
