Chandigarh yet to get specialised hospital for mother, children

Chandigarh: The mother and child centre proposed in Government Multi Speciality Hospital in Sector 16 has yet to take off due to lack of space to shift the existing facilities. This project was initiated in 2018 to provide dedicated services to the mothers and children in a 400 bedded hospital.

Meanwhile, Government Medical College and Hospital in Sector 32 is still waiting for green building compliance for its mother and children wing. The only such dedicated centre in the city is in the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research where the bed occupancy is more than 200% at any given time.

“We had asked to shift the existing departments to Sector 48 hospital. But this has not been approved. So, either we make the building and shift the departments there soon or wait for some area to where we can shift first till the completion of the building,” said director health services, UT, Dr Suman Singh. The new centre is planned to be seven storeyed with state of the art facilities for the paediatric and gynaecology departments. The cost estimate is aroun ₹100 crore.

While at the GMCH 32, the drawings for the mother and child centre, which will be 388 bedded, has been approved, but it got stuck in the green building advice. The chief architecture informed the UT health department that the client approval has been received from GMCH 32. The chief architect further informed that he needs public health advice and complaint with green building advice along with drawings from the engineering department and thereafter the final drawings will be provided by the architecture wing within 15 days.

The drawings of 348 mother and child care centre have been approved. The administrative approval of the rough cost estimated amounting to ₹38,06,56,210 for construction of the same has been accorded and conveyed to the engineering department.

A reminder had been issued to the XEN public health to give green building advices on April 1, said sources.
