Chandigarh: All government hospitals to have chemist shops

Chandigarh: All the government hospitals in the city will now have chemist shops, so that patients will no longer have to travel from far corners such as Manimajra to the GMSH-16 for medicine.

UT health secretary Yashpal Garg said: “These shops will be operational by the year end.” The shops will come up at Government Multi Specialty Hospital, Sector 16 and the civil hospitals of sectors 22, 45, and Manimajra. The lone medicine shop at the GMSH-16 gets long queues, while recently, two Jan Aushadi or generic medical stores were allotted for the government hospitals of sectors 16 and 32.

So far, the patients had to buy medicines from the chemists outside the civil hospitals. An official in the UT health department said on the condition of anonymity: “The shops outside the hospitals do not function round the clock. Inside the hospital, they will remain open 24×7.”

The lone canteen of GMSH-16 was also in single private hands for last 45 years until health department floated a fresh tender recently. Garg said, “This is to invite more bidders, so that we can end this monopoly.” Chemists caught fleecing the patients will be asked to shut shop. He said , “In case we see any irregularity, we’ll rent out these shops to non-governmental organisations.”
