Centre of excellence: SAT to start rare disease registration

Thiruvananthapuram: With the Centre deciding to include the Sri Avittam Thirunal (SAT) hospital in the state capital as one among the ten centres of excellence in the country; steps are on to begin the registration of the rare diseases being reported.

Health minister Veena George organized a meeting on Tuesday to chart out an action plan as part of the hospital becoming the centre of excellence. In the meeting it was decided to provide awareness sessions to the parents on reporting about the rare diseases, its treatment possibilities and the facilities available at the hospital to cure it. For this purpose a special control room will be set up at the SAT hospital. Specially trained employees will be deputed at the help desk in the control room. As part of the centre of excellence criteria, every rare disease reported in the state should be registered at the SAT hospital. A genetics department will also be set up as part of this at the SAT hospital.

The experts at the SAT hospital will be providing the guidance to the hospitals of the respective region where the rare disease has been reported, to provide treatment to the patients.

“As part of the recognition received by the SAT hospital, it would enable the hospital to have rapid strides in providing specialised treatments for rare diseases, to have more research in the women and child health care, and also in establishing newer treatment facilities at the hospital,” said the health minister.

The SAT hospital was selected by the Centre after it was found to be having excellent facilities for detection, treatment and after care for rare diseases in the inspection carried out by the expert team as per the policy’s criteria.
