Indus App Bazaar could not cash in on its early-mover advantage. But India still offers a young apps market and plenty of room for growth. For local players such as Indus and Bharat OS, much will depend on the value proposition they provide to users, rather than bank on regulatory interventions to make their place on devices.
Last week, the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) upheld a penalty of INR1,337.76 crore imposed by the Competition Commission of India (CCI) on Google for its anti-competitive conduct in the Android ecosystem. The tribunal in its 189-page order observed that a number of Google’s practices pointed to an abuse of its dominance, which in some cases, had also stalled local innovation.
