The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) is likely to be implemented by December and the rollout process will soon, West Bengal BJP Haringhata MLA Asim Sarkar said on Friday.

It is learnt that BJP national President J P Nadda held a virtual meeting on Friday with the West Bengal BJP unit, including LoP Suvendu Adhikari and other MLAs, following which Sarkar claimed about the implementation of CAA.

Sarkar is the chairman of BJP’s refugee cell in West Bengal. “The CAA must be rolled out in a bid to meet the long-time aspirations of the people. As the head of the state refugee cell, I think that the CAA will finally come into force by December this year,” Sarkar said. The framing of rules for the CAA will pave the way for its implementation, he said.

Sarkar represents a constituency which is dominated by the Matuas who have come from Bangladesh as refugees and have been demanding the implementation of CAA for a long time.

Despite BJP’s promise about CAA ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls and 2021 assembly polls, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee has clearly stated her stand that she will never allow CAA to be implemented in the state.

The CAA seeks to provide Indian citizenship to Hindus, Jains, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists and Parsis entering India on or before December 31, 2014 from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan after five years of residence here.
