Google’s Nest brand has been keeping an eye on homes for the past 10 years with a comprehensive range of Wi-Fi-connected smart cameras, thermostats and smoke detectors. Now the company is back with some new additions to its range and they could be exactly what many consumers have been waiting for.
Perhaps the most exciting is the new Nest Doorbell which sticks to your home and sends alerts when someone arrives at the front door. Fans of Nest will know that the company already sells its award-winning Hello doorbell but that device needs to be hard-wired into the mains making it expensive and tricky to self install. Most suppliers ask around £399 to buy and fit one to a front door which makes the Nest Hello a pretty expensive option.
That all changes with the new Nest Doorbell as this cheaper £180 device is fully battery-powered meaning anyone can simply charge it up and stick it to their walls.
And don’t panic about the power pack running flat just as you’re waiting for an Amazon delivery to arrive as Google reckons one charge will last for a few months with normal usage.
Along with it being simple to fit, another bonus of this new camera is that Google is offering three hours of free recordings and online playback.
That clearly won’t allow you to see what’s been going on on your drive overnight but it’s far better than the Nest Hello which has no option to see any recordings without paying Google for the privilege.
If you do want to keep an eye on things for longer than three hours you can still sign up to Nest Aware for 30 days of event video history (£5 per month), or there’s the Nest Aware Plus subscription for 60 days of playback (£10 per month).
Other neat features coming to the Nest Doorbell include a more modern and sleek design plus four types of smart alerts which means the camera knows if it’s spotted a person, parcel being delivered, a cat wandering past or a vehicle arriving outside.
Google also reckons its new cameras have also got more intelligent allowing them to send fewer false alerts to the owner.
Of course, just like the Nest Hello, the moment someone presses the button a notification will be sent directly to the account holders smartphone and the device can also be connected to other Nest products such as the Nest Mini or Nest Hub so users can see who is outside their front door.
Along with the Nest Doorbell, Google is also launching a new battery-powered outdoor camera called the Nest Cam (battery). As the name suggests, this device can also be stuck to the outside of your home without the need for wires. All the owner has to do is screw the magnetic dock to the wall with the camera then snapping firmly in place until it needs to be removed again for a refill.
Google says this device is optimised for clearer views in a variety of conditions meaning it should be perfect for the UK’s ever-changing weather.
It also features 1080p video quality with night vision and HDR, which means you’ll be able to see what’s in the frame through bright sun or in the middle of the night.
Finally, if the Wi-Fi goes down or there’s a power cut, Nest Cam will automatically store up to one hour of recorded events in its local memory meaning nothing will ever be missed.
