BSNL to start rolling out 4G by November, 5G coming by August 2023: Reports – Times of India

0
State-owned telecom firm BSNL will start rolling out 4G services from November and 5G by August next year, Chairman and Managing Director PK Purwar said at the ongoing India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2022. BSNL 5G rollout date has also been confirmed by IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, multiple reports have suggested. Private telecom players Jio, Airtel and Vodafone Idea made 5G-related announcements on the opening day of the IMC in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“The first roll out (of planned 4G network) should take place in November. The [IT] minister has given us a clear path that August 15, 2023, should be the date when BSNL should be in the 5G domain. We should be able to meet it (the target timeline),” PTI quoted Purwar as saying. BSNL is purchasing 4G network gears and they will be upgradable to 5G through software updates.
Meanwhile, media reports say that Vaishnaw has mentioned that India will have three private and one public telecom player that will roll out 5G in order to make 5G affordable for people in India. The IT minister has also reportedly said that 5G services will be available in over 200 cities in the coming six months and attempts are being made to make 5G services available in 80-90% of the country in the next two years.
Jio, Airtel 5G services soon
While BSNL may still have work to do in the 5G space, telecom giants Jio, Airtel and Vodafone Idea have already announced their plans to roll out the next-generation network in India. Airtel became the first company to announce the launch of 5G services in the country and has already started offering 5G services in 8 cities.
Reliance Jio will launch the services on Diwali and plan to offer affordable services pan India by December 2023. Vodafone Idea, however, hasn’t given any timeline and said there would be a progressive roll out of Vi 5G network and services over the next few years.
