Bracewell does his best in Black Caps defeat
India has beaten the Black Caps by 12 runs in the first ODI in Hyderabad thanks to a brilliant double century from opener Shubman Gill.
New Zealand all-rounder Michael Bracewell scored his second ODI century, but the task was too great for the tourists.
After deciding to bat first India made 349/8 with Gill scoring 208 from just 149 balls.
His innings included nine sixes and 19 fours.
It is the tenth time a player has scored 200 in an ODI, while it was the first ever scored against New Zealand.
The previous highest score against New Zealand was by Sachin Tendulkar, who scored 186 not out in Hyderabad in 1999.
In just his second game for New Zealand Henry Shipley took two wickets for 74 runs.
In reply New Zealand opener Finn Allen scored 40, but the rest of the top order didn’t offer much as they slumped to 131/6 before Mitchell Santner and Michael Bracewell came together.
Bracewell scored 140 from 78 balls with his innings including 12 fours and 10 sixes.
Santner added 57.
Bracewell and his batting partners did get the equation down to 20 off the last over, but his luck ran out and New Zealand was bowled out with four balls remaining.
India seamer Mohammad Siraj was the pick of the bowlers with 4-46, including two late wickets at a crucial stage, while Kuldeep Yadav and Shardul Thakur also bagged two wickets each.
The second game of the three match series is in Jaipur on Saturday night.
