BMW owners can now unlock their cars with Android phones – Times of India
BMW Digital Key Plus: Supported phone models
BMW Digital Key Plus is currently available on the Galaxy S23+, S23 Ultra, S22+, S22 Ultra, S21+, S21 Ultra, Z Fold 4, Z Fold 3, and Note 20 Ultra. The feature will work with these phones only in markets where Samsung Wallet is available. Moreover, the Digital Key Plus will also work with Pixel 7 Pro and Pixel 6 Pro smartphones.
BMW Digital Key Plus: How to set up and how it works
Car owners need to set up this feature from the My BMW app. To enable secure communication between the phone and the car, the technology uses ultra-wideband technology (UWB). So, this feature will available on devices running Android 13 or later that support UWB. The company has also shared a list of the Android phone models which are currently compatible with the feature.
Once enabled, this feature can be used as a replacement for the physical car key. Users can also program Digital Key Plus to do other things like automatically unlocking vehicles when they are approaching and locking the car when they walk away. If the same vehicle is used by other family members, owners don’t need to share the key with others. Users can set up Digital Key Plus on five other compatible phones.
Importance of UWB
BMW has also explained the importance of UWB in its blog post. The company claims that the precision of UWB means that “the risk of relay attacks, where the radio signal is jammed or intercepted, is virtually eliminated.” This makes the feature a safe replacement for traditional keys.
