BJP willing to accommodate talent: Party’s message after poll victories

0
As BJP completes government formation in the four states it won in the recent assembly polls with the swearing of Goa government on Monday, one message it sends out is that good work gets rewarded to both insiders and outsiders.

BJP’s formula of success, election after election, seems to be to attract talent from other parties while carrying forward its core support. This has become a continuous process in every election starting from 2014.

Based on their influence and winnability, the party has successfully accommodated leaders who are not of BJP background and rewarded them for their hard work.

Opportunities for outsider

In the new BJP, it doesn’t matter whether a person has been a long-serving member of the party; newly joined members get equal opportunity based on their utility and talent.

A look at the new Uttar Pradesh cabinet, for example, reveals several faces that are not part of the BJP DNA, but have joined the party in recent times. Brajesh Pathak, AK Sharma, Jitin Prasada, Assem Arun and a few others have been given preference over long-serving leaders like Srikant Sharma, Ashutosh Tandon, and Siddharth Nath Singh.

There are 126 first-time MLAs of BJP in UP. It gave tickets to 34 leaders who came from other parties and out of that 20 won. In the cabinet, there are 32 new ministers out of 52.

Continuity of change

Right from 2014, the party has been attracting leaders from other parties to fill the gap between winning and losing. In 2022, in UP it formed a joining committee whose job was to fish for good faces from the opponents and reward them as per their ability.

In the middle of the election campaign, Congress leader RPN Singh was poached as the party considered him useful in Kushinagar. The bet paid off and BJP won all the seats of Kushinagar, including Fazil Nagar where SP leader Swami Prasad Maurya was contesting. In terms of leadership, the party has reposed faith in existing chief ministers in all the states as the mandate was for continuity in terms of leadership. In Uttarakhand, it relied on the existing set of leaders and gave tickets to 36 sitting MLAs. Most of the leaders who came from Congress are part of the cabinet including Saurabh Bahuguna, son of former chief minister Vijay Bahuguna.

Connect with the Centre

BJP knows most of its success lies on two things – popularity of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and implementation of a host of central government schemes, reaching to the last mile. Keeping that in mind, leaders who have an attitude to deliver on ground and connect to the Centre get precedence.

Take the name of AK Sharma who was tasked with controlling the Covid-19 situation during the second wave in Varanasi and nearby districts. Everyone in Varanasi was surprised with the inclusion of Daya Shankar Mishra, famously known as Dayalu Guru. He had joined the party in 2014 and since then he has never contested an election.

As reported by ET earlier, there are five people in the UP cabinet who are not members of any house at present. They have been given a chance on account of their proven work and commitment to the party work.

Overall, the approach signals that BJP will remain a favourite destination for any leader from other parties who adds value and wants an opportunity to justify his or her talent.
