The dollar value of the transaction was not released. The deal is subject to regulatory approval and the companies did not say when it is expected to close.

The companies said Distributel will continue to operate independently and existing operations will continue under the leadership of current Distributel chief executive Matt Stein.

Distributel was founded in 1988 as a long distance telephone provider to become a full service telecommunications provider with offices across the country and a national network.

On its website, Distributel calls itself one of the “pioneers” of the independent network service provider industry. In the past, the company has been a vocal advocate of increased competition within the Canadian telecom sector.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published Sept. 2, 2022.
