Be safe with candles and incense

Watch this video to learn more about being safe with incense and candles.

The Seattle Fire Department responded to a home fire earlier this month that was later determined to be caused by a candle. This fire provides another reminder about the potential damage from a single candle flame or from burning incense.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, there are on average 20 candle-related fires each day in the U.S. and approximately one-third (37%) of home candle fires start in bedrooms.

Consider adopting the following candle and incense safety rules in your home:

  1. Always keep burning candles and incense within sight. Extinguish all candles and incense when leaving a room or before going to sleep.
  2. Always use a candleholder specifically designed for candle use. The holder should be heat resistant, sturdy and large enough to contain any drips or melted wax.
  3. Keep burning candles and incense away from items that can catch on fire such as furniture, drapes, bedding, carpets, books, paper, etc.
  4. If light is needed during a power outage, use battery-operated lights instead of candles.
