MUMBAI: Almost a year after it emerged that the BCCI – in its first big staff lay-offs since the Covid outbreak – had decided to not renew the annual contracts of 11 coaches at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), including five retired India players -Ramesh Powar, SS Das, Hrishikesh Kanitkar, Subroto Banerjee and Sujith Somsundar – the cricket body is in hiring mode again.
After extending the deadline to apply for the position of ‘Head of Cricket’ at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) till August 31, the BCCI has invited applications for the post of batting, bowling (fast & spin bowling), fielding coaches and ‘Head of Cricket Education’ at the NCA, on its website.
The last date to apply for all the other coaching positions is September 10. This is a clear signal that the NCA, after brief periods of inactivity due to Covid-caused lockdowns in both the waves, is in full functional mode again. It recently conducted a level 2 hybris course’ for cricket coaches, and amongst the participants were former India all-rounders and brothers Irfan and Yusuf Pathan, ex-India opener and selector Devang Gandhi, Abhishek Nayar, Ashok Dinda, Jammu & Kashmir all-rounder Parveez Rasool and Naman Ojha. Post the eight-day onsite course, Irfan Pathan told Crictracker that the best thing to have happened to Indian cricket was former India captain Dravid taking up the role of Head Coach at NCA.
Dravid is the only one to have applied for the Head of Cricket job at NCA so far. The development has ended all speculation about him replacing Ravi Shastri as head coach of the senior national side after the T20 World Cup in November.
The age limits for all these job vacancies at NCA is 60.
Kanitkar and Shiv Sundar Das were the batting coaches at NCA, while Powar (spin) and Banerjee (pace) were the bowling coaches at NCA, while Somasundar is currently the ‘Head of cricket Education.’ Powar is now the head coach of the India women’s team, while Das is the side’s batting coach.
