0

Over the years, food adulteration has increasingly become a matter of concern. Whether it’s our everyday vegetables that might be sprayed with colour, milk mixed with water or the packed foods combined with extraneous matter- these things often make us question what we consume on an everyday basis. As this concern rises, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has taken the initiative to inform the public about it and do simple tests at home to check the food adulteration. Recently, they took to Instagram to show how you can test if your food grains are adulterated with ‘Dhatura.’

For the unversed, Dhatura, also known as jimson weed, are poisonous flowering plants. As per a research published in ‘Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine,’ “Dathura’s ingestion induces characteristic symptoms. The mouth becomes dry, an intense thirst develops, the vision gets blurred with prominent mydriasis and the heart rate increases. This is followed by hallucinations, delirium, and loss of motor coordination which may lead to command ultimately to death by respiratory failure.”

So, how to check if your food grains are adulterated with dhatura? Check out the simple test by FSSAI.

Here’s How To Check If Your Food Grains Are Adulterated With Dhatura

All you need to do is, take a small flat plate and pour in the food grains. Now, you need to look for any blacking-brown flat seeds. If you find any of them, those seeds are called dhatura. If you don’t see any, then your grains are not adulterated.

Take a look at FSSAI’s video here:

Earlier, FSSAI had posted a video on how to check if your cloves are mixed with exhausted cloves. For the same, you would need to fill a glass with water and a few cloves. The unadulterated cloves will sink to the bottom of the glass, while the others will float on the water’s surface. Check out the test here:

Take these tests today and let us know if you found any adulteration in your everyday items.
