Apple to drop ‘Hey’ from ‘Hey Siri’ – Times of India
According to a recent tweet from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, it’s possible that the upcoming announcements may include a change to the way Siri is triggered.
In a previous report from November, Gurman mentioned that Apple is developing a new feature that will allow Siri to understand and respond to commands without requiring the “Hey Siri” trigger phrase. Instead, users will only need to say “Siri.”
Apple testing to ditch “Hey” from “Hey Siri”
The company is striving to eliminate the “Hey” from the trigger phrase, thereby enabling users to simply say “Siri” followed by a command. Although this might appear to be a minor modification, executing it requires a considerable amount of AI training and engineering work.
The challenge lies in enabling Siri to comprehend the phrase “Siri” in various accents and dialects. Since having two words, “Hey Siri,” enhances the probability of the system accurately recognizing the signal.
The change to Siri that would allow users to trigger it with a simple command like Amazon‘s voice assistant, where users just need to say “Alexa” to invoke the assistant.
In addition, the company is working on integrating Siri with third-party apps and services to provide better assistance.
Although the original timeline was for the changes to roll out in 2023 or 2024, a recent tweet suggests it may happen sooner at the upcoming WWDC. This is expected to coincide with the announcement of Apple’s mixed-reality headset, which is rumoured to feature voice controls.
Apple WWDC developers conference kicks off later today, till June 9. Later today, Apple CEO Tim Cook will take the stage for keynote, where the company is expected to announce its first-ever mixed-reality headset, new Macs, and update to iOS, macOS, and more.
