Apple: Samsung grows, Apple falls as smartphone market continues to suffer – Times of India
As per the report the global production volume of smartphones in the first quarter of 2023 was just 250 million units—marking a 19.5% YoY decrease. “This represents not only the greatest annual decrease but also a historic low in quarterly production since 2014,” notes the report by Trendforce.
How the big names fared
According to the report, Samsung saw increase in production during the first quarter, reaching 61.5 million units, which represents a 5.5% quarter-on-quarter increase. This growth was attributed to the successful launch of the Galaxy S23 series.
Apple, on the other hand, faced a significant drop of 27.5% in smartphone production in the first quarter, delivering a total of 53.3 million units. The newly released iPhone 14 series accounted for approximately 78% of this figure, showcasing an improvement compared to the same period in the previous year. Trendforce predicts a projected decrease of 20% for Apple in the second quarter.
Oppo (including Oppo, Realme, and OnePlus), as per the report, strategically reduced their production volume in the first quarter to 26.8 million units, marking a 17% quarter-on-quarter decrease. However, TrendForce forecasts a more than 30% rise in Oppo’s production during the second quarter, thanks to successful inventory management and a moderate resurgence in demand, particularly in Southeast Asia and other regions. Notably, Oppo has been strengthening its market share of high-end models in China and achieving significant sales success in South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Latin America, with overseas markets accounting for nearly 60% of its total sales.
Xiaomi (including Xiaomi, Redmi, POCO) witnessed a decline in production volume during the first quarter, reaching 26.5 million units, which represents a 27.4% quarterly decrease.
Vivo also reported a decline of 14.2% in the quarter mainly because the stagnant demand in the Chinese market.
