Apple: How Lionel Messi’s move to MLS may be a ‘good news’ for Apple – Times of India

0

Lionel Messi is moving to the US club Inter Miami to continue his football career in Major League Soccer (MLS), the country’s highest level of football tournament. Reports have suggested that Apple, along with Adidas, has a significant role in bringing the World Cup winner to the country and may benefit from this transfer.
Apple TV+ and MLS
Last year, Apple signed a 10-year partnership with MLS to stream all matches live through the Apple TV app. Messi coming to the US has purportedly made Apple’s subscription offer more appealing.
MLS Season Pass cost $14.99 per month or $99 for the entire season. For Apple TV+ subscribers, prices dropped to $12.99 per month and $79 for the entire year. Apple has the exclusive rights to MLS games, for which it’s reportedly paying the league at least $250 million per year.

It is likely that more people will now be subscribing to season pass to see the iconic footballer play live on TV at a time that suits them.
According to a tweet by ESPN, Messi’s proposed contract terms include a cut of revenue from new subscribers to Apple TV’s MLS Season Pass streaming service.
This also suggests that Apple anticipates an increase in subscription purchases post the transfer is finalised, particularly by a global audience who was until now glued to big leagues in Europe.

Messi documentary series on Apple TV+
Earlier this week, Apple announced that it would air a four-part documentary series on Messi on Apple TV+. The documentary series on Messi will focus on his FIFA World Cup run. It is to be noted that football-related series Ted Lasso is one of Apple TV’s biggest streaming hits.
In addition to Apple, Adidas will also share with the player a portion of the profits derived from merchandising sales. Adidas is an important sponsor of the MLS and dresses all 29 teams in the league.
