Apollo Hospitals launches genomics institute

Mumbai: Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai, an advanced quaternary care hospital launched the Apollo Genomics Institutes to provide comprehensive care to patients and families with genetic disorders.

The genomics institute will help individuals, couples and families understand the medical, psychological, familial, and reproductive implications of genetic disorders. It would ensure early assessment and identification of genetic conditions with relevant interventions, long-term treatment, and care.

Sangita Reddy, Joint Managing Director, Apollo Hospitals Group said, “Research shows that many diseases may have a direct or indirect genetic origin. Apollo Hospitals is proud to create a multidisciplinary Apollo genomics institutes that will bring genomic medicine into everyday clinical care and help patients and families with genetic indispositions. The institute will provide comprehensive care including diagnosis and testing, rehabilitation, counselling, and multidisciplinary care for patients and their families.”

Genomic medicine provides information on the risk of an individual developing a disease and their response to a particular treatment and enables precision and personalised medicine. In addition to rare disorder diagnosis, it is also being used in cancer pharmacogenomics and for tracking outbreaks of infectious diseases.

Talking about the benefits of the new institute, Dr Anupam Sibal, Professor, and Group Medical Director, Apollo Hospitals said, “The institutes will translate genetic medicine into real benefits for patients with dedicated and experienced genetic consultants and certified genetic counsellors. Clinical conditions where genomic medicine can play a transformational role include developmental delays in children, liver, kidney, neuro, and cardiac disorders multiple pregnancy losses, advanced maternal age, infertility, and history of genetic disease in the family.”

Dr Rashid Merchant, Consulting Paediatrician, Apollo Hospital said “Despite vast challenges, there has been a dramatic shift in successful treatments for genetic disorders. The purpose of this venture at the Apollo Hospitals is to provide genomic services to Navi Mumbai and beyond and serve as a Reference Centre for Western India”

Santosh Marathe, Regional CEO, Western Region, Apollo Hospitals, added,“ The institutes hopes to reduce the disease burden while ensuring early assessment and interventions. The institute has experienced genetic consultants and certified genetic counsellor with multi-disciplinary integrated supportive care providers in occupational therapy, physiotherapy, psychology and speech-language therapy.”
