Angry Birds: Sega may acquire Angry Birds-maker Rovio for $1 billion: Report – Times of India

Angry Birds was once a popular mobile gaming franchise that debuted in 2009. This franchise has two movies and a theme park in China under its belt. Moreover, Angry Birds have also been included in multiple merchandise starting from pencil boxes to board games. The franchise hasn’t been much popular among mobile gamers like the way it used to be in its initial days.
According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, Japanese video gaming company Sega is now planning to acquire Angry Birds developer Rovio for a price of nearly $1 billion. The report also mentions that if talks don’t fall apart, the deal is expected to be sealed within the upcoming week.

Angry Birds: The game
The goal of the first Angry Birds game was to use a slingshot and launch a bird. Players had to use the birds in an attempt to hit one of the pigs on the other side of the screen and destroy them. These pigs were protected by different materials like wood, glass, and stone.
As players flung their birds, they often hit some of the protective materials before hitting the hidden pigs. Players had to use their birds to bypass these obstructions to destroy the pigs. In its initial days, the game was popular among several users.
Angry Birds also became the first-ever mobile game to achieve one billion downloads. The game’s demand made its developer Rovio launch 21 more Angry Birds games later on.

Angry Birds maker Rovio’s acquisition
As per the report, last month, Rovio ended negotiations with Israel’s Playtika Holding Corp that valued the deal at more than $800 million. However, Sega reportedly has valued the Angry Birds maker at a price 25% higher.
Rovio is yet to come up with another franchise that was as famous as Angry Birds. However, Sega might have other plans to monetise the popular gaming franchise.
In 2022, Rovio said that all of its games combined had five billion downloads in total. This deal also values each of these downloads at 20 cents.
