Separate ringtone and notification volume in Android

This feature has been in testing for a couple of months with the first sighting in December in Android 13 QPR2 (Quarterly Platform Release) Beta 1, according to a report by 9to5Google. It was an ADB command that added “Ring volume” and “Notification volume” as two separate options in the settings menu under ‘Sound’, the report added. But Google didn’t add this in the Android 13 QPR2 stable update that was released in March, and it isn’t available in QPR3 (Beta 3) either.

It is confirmed though that the separate volume buttons will arrive soon as Google confirmed the feature request in Android’s issue tracker from December 2021 with the comment, “The request feature will be available in a future build.” With the addition of another volume slider, there will be a total of five options including media volume, alarm volume, and ring volume.

As for the release timeline, there is no word yet and we don’t know how Google plans to roll it out. Android 13 is slated for the QPR3 stable update which is scheduled to release in June so it might roll out in this one. But we could see it arriving as part of Android 14’s new set of features that will come later this year.

9to5Google notes that some users who are on Android 14 Beta 1 are already seeing this feature so the latter might be more likely. But considering this isn’t a big feature, we might just see it on Android 13 too. It would still be very helpful for people who don’t want to have the same volume levels for notifications and ringtone.
