Andhra Pradesh: Guntur GGH doctors give life to patient suffering from jaundice for over 20 years

Guntur: Giving relief from a two-decade-long ailment, the doctors at Government General Hospital (GGH) in Guntur performed critical surgery through an advanced laparoscopic procedure.

GGH is the first government healthcare institution in the state to successfully handle such a rare surgery.

A few private corporate hospitals have the experts and equipment to take up such surgeries.

Speaking to the media, head of the surgery department, Dr Yekula Kiran Kumar said that Shaik Mahabub Basha (36) of Cherukuru village in Purchur mandal of Bapatla district has been suffering from jaundice for the past 20 years. He is unable to get relief from stomach pain and other health disorders inspite of visiting many government and private hospitals. Experiments with the local naturopathy and Ayurveda methods have also not found remedial. Severe fever and vomitings had become common ailments for Basha due to the non-recovery jaundice.

Although, the doctors performed two separate surgeries to remove stones from liver and inserted stents, it was also not proved successful as jaundice returned to haunt him. Recently, the family rushed him to GGH where a team of gastroenterology department headed by Dr Nagur Basha provided basic treatment and referred the case to surgery department for further evaluation.

Surgery department chief Dr Kiran went through the case and decided to go for removal of ball gladder to provide permanent relief. However, the team found that the patient might not withstand the surgical procedures as he required to undergo two major surgeries. Then, Dr Kiran decided to handle both the surgeries through advanced laparoscopic method without going for major surgeries. The team removed ball gladder from right side and spleen from left wide without opening the stomach.

“We found that the internal bleeding from spleen is the main cause for the continued high levels of bilirubin leading to jaundice. This is also causing formation of stones in the liver,” said Dr Kiran.

He said that it took nearly six hours to complete the surgeries. The team performed a similar surgery to remove spleen to another patient Kannababu to provide relief.

He said that the doctors from surgery wing, gastroenterology and anesthesia relentlessly worked to make the surgeries successful.

“I have virtually experienced hell for the past two decades. I am now feeling living in heaven after the surgeries. Deeply indebted to the GGH doctors,” said Basha.

GGH superintendent Dr N Prabhavathi complimented the doctors on successful completion of critical surgery with advanced method.
