Amitabh Bachchan dedicates iconic Deewaar monologue to mother Teji Bachchan at ’90s concert. Watch

On the1975 film Deewaar 48th anniversary, a rare video shared on Twitter shows Amitabh Bachchan re-enacting an iconic scene from the Hindi feature for his mother Teji Bachchan on stage. The actor was part of the Jumma Chumma overseas concert in 1991 and he delighted the crowd by dedicating his monologue to his mother. Deewaar, directed by Yash Chopra, also starred Shashi Kapoor, Neetu Kapoor, Nirupa Roy and Parveen Babi. An Amitabh fan shared the video on Twitter with the caption, “Amitabh Bachchan Performing on stage his monologue from the film Deewaar ~ Dynamic & Powerful @SrBachchan (Jumma Chumma Concert 1991) Must watch ! 48 years of #Deewaar.” Walking on stage, the actor addresses the audience and shares, “This one is from a scene that is a particular favourite of mine. And it also happens to be a favourite of my mother’s and my mother is somewhere there in the audience today and I dedicate this piece for her.”

Explaining the setup of the scene, he tells the audience about his character Vijay. His mother is ill and he goes to the temple to pray for her. The monologue begins with the iconic line, “Aaj khush toh bahut hoge tum (You must be very happy today).” Vijay doesn’t visit the temple, but makes this exception for his mother, who is a loyal devotee. Getting emotional, he begs that she recovers soon and he will take any punishment for her sake.

Fans commented that they got goosebumps at Amitabh’s rendition of the famous scene. One fan wrote, “Superb ultimate wowww.” Written by Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar, Deewaar featured Amitabh’s Vijay as a top smuggler of Mumbai, while Shashi played his brother, a police officer. Nirupa plays their mother who is torn between her love for her sons on opposite sides of the law.

The award-winning film picked up seven Filmfare Awards in 1976, including Best Film, Best Screenplay, Best Dialogue, Best Director, Best Sound, Best Story, and Best Supporting Actor for Shashi. Amitabh and Nirupa were also nominated for their performances but it was Shashi and the other iconic line, ‘Mere paas maa hain (I have my mother),” that ended up with the trophy.
