AMD has given a closer look at the Ryzen 7000 series desktop processors at its Computex 2022 keynote. The upcoming desktop platform will be based on the Zen 4 architecture, reports XDA Developers. Among other announcements, this US-based chip-making company has also unveiled the new AMD Socket AM5 which will be used by the upcoming processors. AMD teased these products for the first time at CES 2022 and the company is expected to launch these PC chipsets later this year. The AMD Ryzen 7000 series processors will be the first ones to use the company’s new Zen 4 architecture that uses a 5nm manufacturing process. The chipmaker has claimed that the upcoming 7000 series processors will double the amount of L2 cache per core. For example, the latest AMD Ryzen 9 5950X has a total of 8MB of L2 cache.
AMD Ryzen 7000 series processors expected features
The upcoming AMD Ryzen 7000 series processors are also expected to have a higher clock speed and the company claims that these chipsets will offer up to a 15% increase in single-core performance. AMD also showed off that these desktop platforms can easily lay claims to beating Intel Alder Lake processors.
The company demonstrated a pre-production 16-core processor performing over 30 per cent faster than the Intel Core i9-12900K chipsets in a multi-threaded Blender workload. The report also mentioned that the company also showed that the Ryzen 7000 series processor consistently maintains 5.5GHz during gaming sessions
AMD will also be using a new I/O die built on a 6nm process in these chipsets. This new die will offer a decently powerful integrated GPU as it includes an RDNA 2 graphics engine. The series will also include a new low-power architecture based on AMD’s mobile processors and will support — up to four displays, DDR5 and PCIe 5.0.
AMD Socket AM5 Platform expected specifications
AMD will also be launching the AMD Socket AM5 platform featuring an LGA design with 1718 pins to go along with the Ryzen 7000 processors. However, the company has confirmed that users will be able to connect existing AM4 coolers with the new AM5 platform. This means that users won’t have to replace all the components in their PC. This new socket is expected to support processors with up to a 170W TDP, moreover, it will feature — up to 24 PCIe 5.0 lanes, dual-channel DDR5 memory support and the SVI3 power infrastructure. These PCIe 5.0 lanes will offer support for up to 14 SuperSpeed USB ports, with speeds up to 20Gbps.
AMD has also announced a series of three new motherboards based on the AM5 architecture, which is — the B650, X670, and X670 Extreme. All three motherboards support PCIe 5.0 storage, however, the X670 has optional support for PCIe graphics while the X670 Extreme can support two PCIe 5.0 graphics slots. Meanwhile, the best overclocking capabilities are restricted to the X670 Extreme motherboards, whereas some overclocking support can also be expected on the X670. Multiple partners including — Asus, ASRock and more will be offering boards based on the new platforms. Apart from that, AMD also expects to see the launch of PCI 5.0-based SSDs around the same time, which will be to take advantage of the increased bandwidth, promising up to 60% faster storage speeds.
AMD new laptop platforms expected specifications
AMD has also unveiled a new series of APUs called Mendocino that will be coming in the fourth quarter of 2022, meant for laptops priced from $399 to $599 (roughly around Rs 31,000 to 46,500). These new processors combine AMD’s Zen 2 cores (with up to four cores and eight threads) with integrated RDNA 2 graphics. Considering the price point, users are expected to get great overall performance for both CPU and GPU tasks. Moreover, these processors are built on a 6nm process like the already available Ryzen 6000 series that supports LPDDR5 memory.
What is AMD Advantage?
Lastly, the company also discussed its framework for laptops called AMD Advantage. This framework combines AMD CPUs and GPUs to take advantage of their enhanced connectivity with smart features like Smart Access Memory, SmartShift and others. AMD also introduced SmartAcess Storage which builds on Microsoft’s DirectX storage technology and Smart Access Memory which claims to reduce game load times. More details about this new feature will be available in the upcoming months.
In other news, MediaTek has announced 1050 processors that supports mmWave 5G and sub-6GHz 5G. Click here to know more.
