Mani Ratnam’s magnum opus Ponniyin Selvan 2, which was released amid very high expectations, is struggling to pick up momentum at the box office after registering a solid start. As per trade sources, the film which has grossed over 280 crore so far globally, won’t be able to beat the lifetime gross earning of PS 1 which stands at over 500 crore. PS 2 is the second part in the Ponniyin Selvan franchise, which has been adapted from Kalki’s iconic novel of the same name. After attempting to make the film twice in the past, Mani Ratnam successfully managed to complete the film this time. The films star Vikram, Aishwarya Rai, Karthi, Trisha Krishnan, Jayam Ravi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Aishwarya Lekshmi and Prakash Raj among others.

As per trade analyst Trinath, PS 2 won’t be able to beat the lifetime earnings of PS 1 from its theatrical run. “PS 2 started off on a strong note at the box-office. However, the film did earn mixed response from audiences who felt part 1 was far better. As of Wednesday, the film has grossed over Rs. 280 crore globally and it is expected to add another 60 crore by the end of its theatrical run. This means, PS 2 won’t beat PS 1 in its lifetime theatrical collection,” Trinath told Hindustan Times

The first part in the franchise grossed over 500 crore at the box-office globally during its theatrical run. In Tamil Nadu, PS-1 went on to become the highest grossing Tamil film of all time in Tamil Nadu after surpassing Kamal Haasan’s Vikram’s lifetime gross of 183 crore in the state last year.

PS-2 was also dubbed and released in Hindi as well as Telugu. Unlike the first part, PS-2 has done reasonably well in Telugu states.

The film marked Aishwarya Rai’s comeback to Tamil cinema after a decade. Aishwarya played dual roles – Nandini and her mute mother Mandakini Devi.

Meanwhile, Mani Ratnam will soon commence work on his next yet-untitled Tamil project with Kamal Haasan. The duo is reuniting after three decades for this project which is expected to go on the floors in the second half of the year.
