AIIMS-Delhi to set up museum to showcase medical legacy

NEW DELHI: With a view to showcase its legacy, AIIMS has decided to set up a museum of archives and formed an eight-member committee to collect and maintain the archives. The archives will also be digitalised on the institute’s website.

An office memorandum issued by AIIMS Delhi director, Professor M Srinivas, stated that most of the renowned educational institutes across the globe maintain archives to demonstrate their legacy.

These archives are a witness to the past and provide an explanation for historical actions and the rationale behind current decisions. They assist new generations in adapting to the institute’s culture and align their individual objectives with those of the organisation. Therefore, it is imperative that the archives are collected and maintained at AIIMS in the library and in a museum.

The eight-member committee chaired by Dr Peush Sahni will collect the archives by interviewing former directors and retired senior faculty members of the institute. AIIMS has developed a rich culture that amalgamates evidence-based medicine with strong ethics that work in synergy and deliver results that were envisioned during its inception.

However, the memories are starting to fade into the past, especially for those who only have a recent association with the institution, officials said.

According to the administration, all the medals and awards won by the institute since its inception will be placed in the museum along with the details of the winners of the awards.

AIIMS was established in 1956 as an autonomous institution of national importance by an Act of Parliament with the objective of setting the highest standards of medical education in India. Nearly seven decades into its journey, AIIMS Delhi continues to be the forerunner in the field of health education, research and patient care across the country, said an official.
