Sources in the Gujarat government informed that it had been preparing for Ahmedabad to make a bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, and had set itself a target of completing all infrastructure work by 2028, but it is now actively considering the prospect of bidding to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games, and is hopeful that the Union government be in favour of Ahmedabad bidding to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
‘Projects for Olympic Games bid to be complete by 2026’
Union home minister Amit Shah has been personally supervising progress of work on various projects connected to the Olympics bid, and the top leadership of the BJP has asked the state government to simultaneously begin work on all connected projects, sources said.
Claiming that the Gujarat government will be able to complete all infrastructure works for the Olympic Games bid before 2026, top sources in the state government said on Tuesday. “The projects of Ahmedabad’s bid for the 2036 Olympics will be completed by 2026. Following the development of Victoria pulling out of hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games, Gujarat is confident that it will get a nod from the Union government to make a bid for the 2026 Games at Ahmedabad,” sources claimed.
Recently, Australia-based business planning consultancy Populous was hired to ready the master-plan for Ahmedabad’s bid for Olympics. The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave which is being developed around the Narendra Modi stadium and the Naranpura Sports Complex will be developed with facilities for playing various Olympics sports as Ahmedabad will make a bid to host the 2036 Summer Olympics. These two venues will host a majority of the Olympics sporting events, sources said.
The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave which will come up over an area of 236 acres at Motera, is expected to cost about Rs 4,600 crore, and will have infrastructure to host as many as 20 sports disciplines over 93lakh square feet of built-up area. The project also includes setting up accommodation of 3,000 apartments for athletes, support staff, sports officials and others.
Earlier this year, the state government formed two committees to monitor progress of implementation of projects for Ahmedabad’s bid to host the 2036 Olympics.
The advisory committee has the chief minister as chairperson, Union sports minister as the co-chairperson and the state chief secretary, Union sports secretary and a representative of the Indian Olympics Association (IOA) as members, while the executive committee is headed by the state chief secretary and members of the committee will include the principal secretaries of the urban development and sports departments, the director general of Sports Authority of India, AMC commissioner, GMC commissioner, AUDA CEO and GUDA CEO.
