What is Hive and how does it work?
Hive or Hive Social was founded by Kassandra Pop in 2019 and combines ideas from other social media apps, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and MySpace. As per its website, the platform enables users to embed profile music, share texts and post images, polls, Q&A, and more.
It offers a chronological feed. “One of the biggest issues from algorithm-heavy social media apps is not being shown media you want to see as your account gets heavily targeted with ads and promotions,” the description on the website reads. As per Hive, all friends are displayed fairly in chronological order and there is no shadow banning or higher priority account shown.
The platform allows users to browse topic-based communities, like science, technology, music, fashion, and gaming, among others. It also allows users to like, comment and repost the shared content. It features tabs for accessing a profile, a “Discover” section for browsing the social network and a tab for notifications.
Twitter vs Mastodon and Koo
Before Hive gained popularity, Twitter users joined Mastodon, an open social media platform from Germany. At that time, its founder Eugen Rochko claimed that the platform has over one million monthly active users with more than 4,89,000 having joined since October 27.
In fact, the homegrown Indian multilingual microblogging platform Koo also gained popularity in recent times. It emerged as the second largest microblogging platform in the world after witnessing a significant increase in users, time spent and users, time spent and user engagement. It announced that the app logged in over 1 million downloads within 48 hours of its launch in Brazil.
