Afghanistan likely to tour India after World Test Championship final | Cricket News – Times of India
MUMBAI: In a significant development, TOI has learnt that for the first time in five years, the Afghanistan cricket team will undertake a short tour to India in June.
“Yes, the Afghanistan cricket team will undertake a short tour to India in June, after the World Test Championship final (at The Oval in London from June 7-11),” a source in the BCCI told TOI.
India will travel to the West Indies in July for two Tests, three ODIs and five T20Is, instead of the three earlier. The itinerary of Afghanistan’s short tour to India isn’t clear yet, but a formal announcement in this regard should be made by either of the boards soon.
This is a major development since it signals BCCI’s support for cricket in Afghanistan even after the takeover of Taliban there in August 2021. In the past, the BCCI has provided its stadiums in Greater Noida, Dehradun and Lucknow as the home base of the Afghanistan cricket team.
Afghanistan had last toured India in June 2018, when they played a one-off Test against the hosts, which they lost by an innings and 262 runs inside two days.
In March, Afghanistan’s full membership in the International Cricket Council survived after an ICC Board meeting of the members concluded that it is not the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB), but the government of that country, which is at fault for not supporting the women’s game there.
Full membership at the ICC requires the member to have a functioning women’s team, but the ICC Board members made an exception in this case, as it is the Taliban that isn’t keen on promoting the women’s game, and not ACB.
This followed an update by the ICC’s working group on the situation in Afghanistan since Taliban stormed to power there.
Imran Khwaja, the ICC’s deputy chairman and head of the working group, met with officials from the ACB and Taliban in Doha twice since November. The working group too had concluded that the issue of women’s cricket in Afghanistan is beyond the control of ACB.
Top-class support staff for Indian women’s cricket team soon
Meanwhile, the BCCI has decided to hire top-class support staff for the Indian women’s cricket team.
“We’ll hire top-class support staff for the Indian women’s team soon, and give them long-term contracts, instead of making ad-hoc coaching appointments via the National Cricket Academy,” a source said.
The decision was taken at the virtual Apex Council meeting on Sunday.
Since removing Ramesh Powar as the head coach of the Indian women’s team in December just ahead of a crucial home series against Australia, the BCCI has not appointed a head coach.
