A designated OPD for women with urological issues in Delhi – ET HealthWorld
New Delhi: Safdarjung Hospital has decided to start a dedicated urology OPD for women, considering a large number of them don’t get proper treatment for urinary bladder problems.
“The decision has been taken to bring into focus the care of women patients with lower urinary tract dysfunction and bladder problems. Women who have been silent sufferers of diseases, such as urinary incontinence and voiding problems, will especially benefit from this,” Dr Pawan Vasudeva, professor and head of Unit II Urology department VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital, told TOI.
Urinary incontinence is an unintentional leak of urine. Stress incontinence refers to the unintentional urine leak associated with sneezing, coughing, etc. Another form of leakage – urge incontinence – refers to the sudden desire to urinate.
Some women continuously secrete urine, which may be a consequence of a genitourinary fistula that forms following childbirth or surgeries like hysterectomies. As a result of incontinence, women fear going out to avoid social embarrassment.
Dr Vasudeva said Video Urodynamics, which is available only at a handful of centres in the country, is now available at Safdarjung. “If there are 1,000 women who need care related to their bladder problem, only 10 end up consulting a urologist. In Indian households, such topics are kind of taboo. Many women choose not to discuss or talk about their health issues with their family members, leave alone consulting a doctor. Bladder problems in women are very much understudied and undertreated.”
Children and adults who suffer from neurogenic bladders are also expected to benefit from the Female and Functional Urology OPD. The bladder function of patients with neurological problems like spina bifida, spinal cord injury, stroke, parkinsonism, etc, becomes abnormal consequent to the neurological illness. Many end up with kidney failure.
On Sunday, the hospital concluded its first annual conference of the Female and Functional Urology section of Urological Society of India. The meeting was attended by over 70 national faculties and over 250 delegates.
