A Californian bungalow gets a facelift with a fun twist

The home

A four-bedroom California bungalow in Melbourne’s south-east, featuring a pool and a studio office.

Who lives here

Kerri Wallace, homewares importer of the Klaylife and Weylandts brands, her husband Luke, founder of tech company Flowstate.Zone, their daughter Sloan, 7, and son Zephyr, 5.

What we did

“I admire the work of artist Prudence Caroline, who also dabbles in interiors, and she gave me endless inspiration,” says Kerri. “Together we dreamed up the look. Then we gave the previous 1980s renovation a facelift and added a pool and Luke’s studio office in the yard.”

“The powder room, because it’s so fun, unexpected and dreamy,” says Kerri. “It always receives a gasp of delight from our guests.”

The ’hood

“The street is filled with young families, and we are a stone’s throw from the beach and park,” she says.

Future plans

“We’ll landscape our front garden and re-do the back decking and entertainment area,” says Kerri.

Best advice

“Colour sparks joy for us, adding good vibes to our home,” says Kerri. “We prefer soft colours with a pop of red to add an edge.”

“We love the red on our Dowel Jones chairs against our mint kitchen,” says Kerri. The table is from Jardan, the light from Klaylife and the art by Miranda Skoczek.Credit:Armelle Habib

“The house’s open-plan design is wonderful as there is so much conversation space and storage – which we never take for granted,” says Kerri.Credit:Armelle Habib

“We went with super soft mint green cabinetry, a tiled splash-back from Earp Brothers and concrete benchtops. The concrete colour was our biggest renovation drama – it turns out concrete doesn’t like to be told what to do,” says Kerri.Credit:Armelle Habib

“In the powder room, we used Gather Co terracotta tiles and travertine floor
tiles from Tiles of Ezra,” says Kerri. The “Flora” wallpaper is by Anna Spiro.Credit:Armelle Habib

“I almost chose beige pavers for the pool area, then stumbled on this pink limestone ‘crazy paving’ tile by Gather Co,” says Kerri. The umbrella is from Basil Bangs.Credit:Armelle Habib

“We converted the front room of the house into our bedroom and have the kids’ rooms upstairs,” says Kerri. The bedhead is by McMullin+Co and the linen is from Dazed but Amazed.Credit:Armelle Habib

In the entry hall, a vibrant painting by Stanislas Piechaczek hangs above a console table by Gesso House. The lamp is by Spanish ceramic sculptor Marta Bonilla and the rug is from Cadrys.Credit:Armelle Habib

“We built a plywood-lined studio office for Luke to work-from-home in. It has a great view of the pool,” says Kerri.Credit:Armelle Habib
