Laser pacemaker lead extracted in Ambedkar hospital – ET HealthWorld
Raipur: The first case of laser pacemaker lead extraction in any government heart institution has been performed at the Department of Cardiology of the advanced cardiac institute of Ambedkar hospital in the state capital.
The Head of the Cardiology Department of ACI Dr Smit Srivastava told TOI that a 63-year-old patient from Rajnandgaon had a problem of a displaced pacemaker inserted in his body. He said, 10 years ago the patient underwent surgery in a private hospital where a pacemaker was inserted. In the year 2020, the average year of his pacemaker was completed so the patient had gone to the hospital to renew its battery. Later after some days, it was found that after inserting the battery, the pacemaker had displaced and come out of the foreskin of the chest.
Along with the pacemaker, the wire that goes to the heart of the pacemaker had got infected, and the doctors had no other option but to remove it which was the hardest part, he added.
He says, the method that is currently going on in India is a mechanical method. In our country, about 100 wire leads are extracted mechanically every year. For the first time ever, lead extraction was done by laser at ACI. The doctors’ team had to exactly extract the wire, which had become as hard as a stone by steaming it with a laser lead extraction technique.
After much study, this technique was adopted to remove the infected wire of the pacemaker of the patient.
The patient’s blood pressure was normal after the procedure. There was no water found in the membrane of the heart. Further, plans are to re-insert the pacemaker on the other side of the patient’s chest and for the Department of plastic surgery to close the old space on the right side by a flap method. The next process will be done after three to four days.
Laser lead extraction is a laser technique, which is used to remove the pacemaker or defibrillator wire or wires from inside the heart. A cardiac pacemaker or an implantable cardiovascular defibrillator (ICD) is implanted in heart patients to regulate the heart rate or heart rhythm.
“This is the first operation done in any government heart medical institution so far”, said the doctor.
