AIIMS bike ambulance to cover all heart ailments, expand radius – ET HealthWorld
New Delhi: Mission DELHI — Delhi Emergency Life Heart-Attack Initiative, an ambitious project of AIIMS Delhi and Indian Council of Medical Research, has expanded its services and coverage area with the launch of Phase II. It will now offer medical help for all types of cardiac-related emergency complications to out-of-hospital patients, said Dr Chandini Suvarna, scientific staffer of the Mission DELHI team.
Started in 2019, Mission DELHI earlier offered pre-hospital thrombolysis service for only heart attack cases through a 24-hour emergency motorbike ambulance response system. “The medical attendees will perform an ECG and send the report to the cardiac centre at AIIMS, where doctors will accordingly provide assistance after looking into the health condition,” Dr Suvarna said.
While earlier its coverage was limited to 5km from AIIMS, the service is now available at more than 160 localities, including Ambedkar Nagar, Sainik Farm, New Friends Colony, Vasant Kunj and Dhaula Kuan. “The new areas also include Ballabhgarh in Faridabad and Old Delhi,” she added.
For the expansion programme, four medical bike ambulances have been bought, taking the total number to eight. The bikes are equipped with portable automated external defibrillators, emergency medication and care kits, oxygen cylinders, clog buster drugs, and a portable ECG device.
A pair of trained nurses rushes to the spot and conduct a quick checkup of the patient, gather his medical history and take the ECG. The team can get an ECG, transmit and interpret the report within 12 minutes of reaching the spot and administer the thrombolytic therapy in the next 12 minutes. They establish a link with cardiologists at AIIMS and provide immediate care. As the emergency treatment is provided, a CATS ambulance takes the patient to the hospital for further treatment.
Since 2019, Mission DELHI has attended to 783 emergency calls. The average wait time for the response is 15 minutes. The programme has introduced doorstep care to save cardiac patients by providing faster medical aid such as clot-buster injections until an ambulance manages to reach them.
