Produce CCTV footage from mortuaries of govt hosps: HCMadurai: The Madras high court on Thursday directed the state government to produce footages from CCTV cameras installed inside mortuaries of three government hospitals in order to ascertain whether the earlier directions passed by this court in 2020, pertaining to installation of operational CCTV cameras in mortuaries, was complied with.

A division bench of justices S S Sundar and S Srimathy directed the state to produce the past three days CCTV footage from the mortuaries at Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai district, Sivaganga Medical College Hospital and Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital.

The court was hearing a petition filed by the state government seeking modification of its earlier order pertaining to appointment of scientific officers in medical college hospitals across the state.

In 2020, a division bench of this court while taking into account several lapses and irregularities while performing postmortems, has passed a series of directions including to appoint scientific officers at the medical college hospitals in all the districts. The court had passed the order while disposing of a public interest litigation filed by an advocate RM Arun Swaminathan.

In the affidavit, the state submitted that pursuant to the order of this court, a committee of experts was constituted. The committee in its report had stated that the post of scientific officers is not mentioned in the staff requirements of the National Medical Council. All districts have a mobile forensic unit .

There are only three scientific officers working in three medical colleges in the state. They are qualified in MA Criminology and do not have any knowledge in medical science. Citing these reasons, the committee has opined that the appointment of scientific officers is not required in government medical college hospitals. Hence, the state sought modification of the order pertaining to the appointment of scientific officers.
