Doughnut skin: A guide to this season’s beauty trends

0

The past year has taught us some fresh beauty lessons and, like most things in fashion, less can often be more.

“Glitter”, “gloss” and “block colour”
are key words this season and our inspiration comes from the Chanel Couture 2022 show earlier this year featuring inky black eyeshadow and dramatically spiked lashes.

Metallic eyeshadow
“Glitter”, “gloss” and “block colour” are key words this season and our inspiration comes from the Chanel Couture 2022 show earlier this year featuring inky black eyeshadow and dramatically spiked lashes. As always with runway, you can go for broke or just take a little inspiration. For a walk on the tamer side, try a soft, sueded grey shadow or an easy-to-wear sheen of taupe cream shadow. There are a slew of swipe-able dramatic metallic shades that don’t require much skill to apply. Again, prep is key to a long-lasting look, so invest in an eye primer which can also double as a daytime eyeshadow. One of our favourites is Clinique’s All About Shadow Primer for Eyes (clinique.com.au, $39).

Glazed doughnut skin

Doughnut skin is palette-perfect skin boosted with light-catching illumination. It has a clear, high-gloss texture and the secret to achieving it is to focus on quality over quantity. Try this morning ritual with four simple steps. First, cleanse using an exfoliating cleanser such as Trinny London Better Off AHA/PHA Gel Cleanser (trinnylondon.com, $50). Follow that with a vitamin C serum, SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic Serum (adorebeauty.com.au, $233). Next, a moisturiser – we like CeraVE Facial Moisturising Lotion (chemistwarehouse.com.au, $23). Lastly, apply sun protector such as Aspect Sun Envirostat Face SPF 50 (adorebeauty.com.au, $38). The night-time routine ideally features a double cleanse and a retinol combined with niacinamide moisturiser such as Olay Regenerist Retinol 24 Night Moisturiser (chemistwarehouse.com.au, $30). The look is glowy and hydrated, with cheekbones to the fore. Start with an oil such as Augustinus Bader’s The Face Oil (augustinusbader.com, $335) pressed into the skin. Next apply luminous foundation for a subtle glaze and finish with highlighter on cheekbones, above the brow bone and on the tip of the nose.

Vinyl Lips
Time to welcome back maskless lips with a slick, glossy bump of colour. Our pick for the season is burnished copper but choices on the colour spectrum are limitless. But, as always, it’s all about prepped lips, especially as the weather cools and lips may start to chap. Try Frank Body Lip Scrub (mecca.com.au, $17). For maximum impact, wear a coloured gloss on its own or shiny up lipstick with M.A.C Lipglass in Clear (maccosmetics.com.au, $34) for a mirror-like finish. Use a lip brush such as Dior Retractable Lip Brush No 31 (sephora.com.au, $46) for a perfect finish and touch-ups on the go.

Coffin nails
I usually favour the short squoval nail but I’m toying with this nail-art phenomenon. Also known as ballerina nails, the shape resembles a stiletto nail with a square tip and it’s achieved using builder gel or acrylics in a nail salon. Numerous celebrities are sporting them, including Kylie Jenner and Rihanna. It works with everything from modern nude-on-nude tones to the French manicure featuring coloured tips and even 3D art (our favourite on Instagram is a jumble of Gummy Bears). But nail health is still paramount, so keep your cuticles oiled and your hands hydrated.
