Yami Gautam: I did some films where my heart didn’t belong, but I will respect it as it was work

Yami Gautam Dhar has as many as five projects lined up for release, and the actor shows no sign of slowing down. However, she claims that this in no way implies that she has or would sign for anything that comes her way. Her choices today, she says, are vasty different from those of the past.

“I have evolved a lot as a professional. I have understood ‘what’s going to work for me’ versus ‘I need to or should do this because that is what works’. Also, the opportunities are different, and my own perspective too” says the 33-year-old, whose latest thriller A Thursday received rave reviews.

The Bala (2019) star recalls receiving a lot of advice about how she should choose her work, but she believes that one should learn from their own experiences.

“I came with a very substantial perspective, that’s why I started my career with Vicky Donor (2012). It’s not possible then that your career will not see those dips and lows, what’s not working for you. I reached a point where I am firm about the idea that no matter what kind of film it is, I need something really substantial to do. I am not using the word stronger, but substantial, it has to have substance in it. That’s what will take you ahead in the longer run,” shares Yami.

Having said that, the actor confesses that she made choices which weren’t substantial and in hindsight she feels she shouldn’t have taken up.

“But even at that time, may be those were the best opportunities I got, I chose the best out of those. It seemed to be not correct, even then I was aware this is not something where my heart belongs to, or what I have come to do in the industry. I will respect those people for giving me work at that time, it was still work at the end of the day,” she says, adding she still respects it all.
