NEW DELHI: The wait is over. The ICC T20 World Cup is finally taking place after five years (it was last held in 2016), and Team India, who won the inaugural title in 2007 is one of the big title favourites.
India are the official hosts of this edition, which was postponed in 2020 due to Covid-19 and is now being played in the UAE and Oman due to the pandemic.
Team India will leave no stone unturned to make it a memorable one for skipper Virat Kohli who will be leading the side for the last time in the shortest format of the game.
With the Super 12 stage, which will see the big teams in action, starting on October 23 and Team Indian opening their campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan a day after, TimesofIndia.com takes you down memory lane to take a look at how India has performed at the T20 World Cup over the years.
INDIA APPEARANCES – WINS AND LOSSES
Inaugural champions India have a great record in the tournament having a win percentage of 63.6 with 21 victories to their name out of the 33 games played so far at the T20 World Cup.
Team India also has a very high win percentage of 65.3 in T20Is since the last edition of the T20 World Cup in 2016. They have played a total number of 72 international matches in the slam bang version of the game registering 47 victories and suffered 22 defeats with no results in 3 matches.

INDIA AT THE T20 WORLD CUP OVER THE YEARS
2007 (Champions): India won the inaugural title under the leadership of ‘Captain Cool’ MS Dhoni. India beat Pakistan via a Bowl Out, but then lost to New Zealand in the opening match of the Super 8 stage. The Men in Blue made it to the semis after defeating England and South Africa. India continued their good run as they defeated a strong Australia in the semis and went on to lift the T20 World Cup trophy after beating Pakistan in a nail-biting final by 5 runs.
2009 (Super 8): Defending champions India had a forgettable outing in the second edition of the T20 World Cup. They were knocked out of the tournament, hosted by England, after losing three matches in a row against West Indies, England, and South Africa in the Super 8 stage. Interestingly, Team India’s only victory came against Ireland in the tournament. Pakistan, who were the runners-up in the previous edition, laid their hands on the trophy after beating Sri Lanka in the final.
2010 (Super 8): India started off well in the third edition as they defeated Afghanistan and South Africa in its first two matches. However, India once again crashed out after losing against Australia, host West Indies, and Sri Lanka in the Super 8 stage. The English side defeated Australia in the final to win their maiden T20 World Cup trophy.

2012 (Super 8): India once again had a great start to the tournament as the Men in Blue comfortably defeated Afghanistan and England in the first two group stage matches making their way to Super 8s of the 2012 edition. India lost to Australia and then beat Pakistan in the Super 8s. But couldn’t make it to the semis despite beating South Africa by 1 run in their third and final Super 8 game. Team India scored 152 after batting first but the permutations and combinations were such that they needed to restrict the South African team at the score of 121 to qualify for the semis. The Daren Sammy-led West Indies defeated Sri Lanka in the final to clinch their maiden title.
2014 (Runners-up): There was no stopping India in this edition as they looked like the team to beat at the T20 World Cup which was held in Bangladesh in 2014. India made it to the title clash in style, defeating the likes of Pakistan, Bangladesh, Australia and South Africa. They hadn’t lost a single match till then, but faltered at the very last hurdle, losing to eventual champions Sri Lanka in the final. Virat Kohli was named player of the tournament for scoring 319 runs in 6 matches. India managed to score 130 runs in the grand finale. Virat Kohli scored 77 runs before being run out off the final ball of the India innings. The Sri Lankan team chased down the 131-run target in the 18th over and comfortably won the final by 6 wickets to clinch their first and till date only T20 World Cup title.
2016 (Semi-finals): Hosts India had a disastrous start to the tournament as they suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of New Zealand in the opening game, but they bounced back strongly and won every game thereafter to make it to the semis. India (192/2) eventually lost to the mighty West Indies (196/3) by 7 wickets in the semis. Virat Kohli was named the player of the tournament for the second successive edition. The Windies went on to win their second title.
KEY INDIA HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE T20 WORLD CUP OVER THE YEARS
– After the group stage match of the 2007 T20 World Cup ended in a dramatic tie, India beat Pakistan 3-0 via a ‘bowl out’ contest. Harbhajan Singh, Robin Uthappa and Virender Sehwag were the successful bowlers for the team.
– Yuvraj Singh made a world record when he smacked 6 sixes in an over off England paceman Stuart Broad in the 2007 T20 World Cup.
– Joginder Sharma defended 13 runs in the historic last over of the 2007 T20 World Cup as Team India emerged as the winner of the inaugural tournament.
– Virat Kohli was named player of the tournament for scoring 319 runs in 6 matches in the 2014 T20 World Cup.
– Kohli was named the player of the tournament in a second successive edition in the 2016 T20 World Cup. He scored 273 runs in 5 innings and was overall second on the most run getters list, behind Bangladesh’s Tamim Iqbal, who scored 295 in 6 innings.
