Don’t use my remarks on Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem for propaganda: Neeraj Chopra | More sports News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Olympic gold medallist Neeraj Chopra on Thursday put to rest an ‘unnecessary’ controversy that had cropped up after his recent interview to TOI.
The star javelin thrower released a video, appealing to people not to “further vested interests and propaganda” after his comments regarding Pakistani javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem “moving around” with his javelin during the final of the Tokyo Games were blown out of proportion on social media.

In an interaction with TOI’s sports team on August 24, Neeraj revealed he wasn’t able to locate his javelin before his first throw. “I was searching for my javelin. Suddenly, I saw Arshad Nadeem moving around with my javelin. I told him, ‘Bhai give this javelin to me, it is my javelin!’ He gave it back to me. That’s why you must have seen I took my first throw hurriedly,” Neeraj had said.

A day later, rumour-mongers gave a different spin. They questioned the Pakistani player’s intentions with some platforms bringing out reports that Nadeem was trying to “tamper” with Neeraj’s javelin.

On social media, facts often get twisted and venomous controversies manufactured. India’s top athlete has displayed both courage and forthrightness in snuffing out one such needless controversy. Other sportpersons can take a cue from him in such matters.

Nothing wrong in sharing each other’s javelin, says Neeraj
Reacting to the controversy, Neeraj tweeted, “I would request everyone to please not use me and my comments as a medium to further your vested interests and propaganda. Sports teaches us to be together and united. I am extremely disappointed to see some of the reactions from the public on my recent comments.”
In the video, Neeraj said there was nothing wrong with Arshad Nadeem taking his javelin and everything that transpired during the final was in accordance with the rules.

“A controversy has come up that I had talked about how I had taken my javelin from Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem before my first throw in the final. It has been made into a big controversy. It’s a very simple thing. We keep our personal javelin (inside a holding rack) but it can be used by anybody. It is the rule and there is nothing wrong in that. He (Nadeem) had the javelin and was preparing for his throw. I asked him to give it to me for my throw. So obviously, it was not wrong of him to prepare with my javelin.
“I am very sad that a big controversy has been created taking my name. It’s my earnest request to all to not indulge in such kind of petty things. We javelin throwers share a good bond and speak to each other nicely. Sports is something that teaches us to walk together and all javelin throwers share mutual respect and love. So, please don’t say hurtful things,” the 23-year-old said.
According to rules, any javelin submitted to the officials by a competitor for his use can also be used by any other participant. This rule applies in all field events except for pole vault.
Chopra, who had used Valhalla version of Nordic brand during the final, made it clear that Nadeem, who had finished fifth, had not done anything wrong. A former coach echoed Chopra’s view: “There is no controversy. It is not that you brought your personal javelin and nobody can use it. When you submitted it, others can also use it. Any participant can use any javelin which is there (in the holding rack).”
