Redmi has launched its first-ever laptop in India, called the RedmiBook Pro. Much like the Mi Notebook launched before it, the RedmiBook aims to offer decent specifications at an affordable price. One could even go as far as saying that it poses a severe threat to the yet-to-be-announced Realme Book. Nonetheless, we’re here to talk about how the RedmiBook fares against the Mi Notebook Horizon Edition. While one can argue that the latter has older hardware and therefore should be exempt, it has a trick or two up its sleeve regardless of its age. Right off the bat, the RedmiBook Pro is the more affordable option here. It costs Rs 49,999 for the maxed-out version, while the Mi Notebook Horizon Edition starts at Rs 54,999. In this comparison, we’re going to leave the cheaper RedmiBook e-learning variant out for the sake of simplicity. Is it worth paying the extra Rs 5,000 for the latter? Let’s find out.

Display

The RedmiBook Pro ships with a slightly larger 15.6-inch FHD (1,920 x 1,080) screen. On the other hand, the Mi Notebook Horizon Edition has a more compact 14-inch display with the same resolution. Xiaomi has neglected to mention the other screen specs for both laptops, such as its peak brightness and colour accuracy. Nonetheless, those looking for a compact notebook can opt for the Mi Notebook Horizon Edition. 

Design

One can’t deny that the Mi Notebook Horizon Edition has more pizzaz to it compared to the RedmiBook Pro. Its bezels are narrower and at 1.3kgs, it is quite light, too. On the other hand, the RedmiBook Pro has remarkably thicker bezels and it weighs a tab more, at 1.8Kgs. However, the Mi Notebook Horizon Edition’s sleek form factor comes at a hefty cost- the notebook doesn’t have an integrated webcam, while the RedmiBook Pro does. While Xiaomi bundles in a webcam along with the retail packaging, many users would prefer the convenience of integrated hardware compared to something that you have to plug in every time. Besides, it hogs a precious USB port, of which there aren’t too many of, to begin with. 

Processor

On paper, the RedmiBook Pro has the Mi Notebook Horizon Edition beat. Its 11th-generation Intel Core i5-11300H is one full generation ahead of the Mi Notebook Horizon Edition’s 10th-generation Intel Core i5-10210U. One won’t really notice the difference between the two parts in light workloads, such as document editing and web browsing. It will be more apparent once you apply more load on the processor. 

Memory and storage

Both the RedmiBook Pro and Mi Notebook Horizon Edition ship with a 512GB NVMe SSD, so there isn’t much to compare here. Once again, the RedmiBook Pro’s newer hardware gives it an advantage, as it ships with 8GB of 3,200MT/s RAM, which is quite faster than the 2,666MT/s modules used on the Mi Notebook Horizon Edition. Once again, the difference is RAM speed doesn’t affect real-world performance a whole lot, outside of a few applications. 

Graphics

Here’s where things begin to favour the Mi Notebook Horizon Edition. The notebook ships with a dedicated Nvidia GeForce MX350 graphics card. The RedmiBook Pro has to rely on the integrated Irix Xe graphics card, which is potent in its own right but cannot hold a candle to pretty much any dGPU. Now, the MX350 isn’t the most powerful graphics card around, but it’ll let you play some AAA games at passable framerates. We can’t say the same about pretty much any Tiger Lake iGPU, unfortunately. 

Ports

Given the somewhat small form factor of both laptops, the input options are quite limited. The RedmiBook Pro offers you two USB Type-C, one USB Type-A, one HDMI port, one RJ-45 Ethernet jack, and a 3.5mm combo audio port. Similarly the Mi Notebook Horizon ships with one USB Type-C, two USB Type-A ports and keeps everything else the same. The extra USB Type-C port on the RedmiBook Pro is nice for docks and whatnot, but that involves spending extra money.

Based on what we know about both laptops, it is clear that each one has its unique use cases. People looking for a thin work-only laptop with a powerful CPU should buy the RedmiBook Pro. Those who want to game a little on the side and aren’t particularly worried about the lack of a webcam will find the Mi Notebook Horizon Edition to their liking.
