Use Google Maps? iPhone warning will make you want to delete it for good

Google Maps users should consider ditching this popular app from their iPhones without delay. At least, that’s the advice in a new report from cybersecurity expert Zak Doffman who has revealed, in an article on Forbes, exactly what data Google Maps collects from its millions of users.

Apple recently announced new rules which now lets iPhone users easily check to see exactly what information apps such as Google Maps are gathering once installed on their devices and it makes for some pretty terrifying reading. Every app listed on the App Store needs to disclose how much data they’re gathering, what is being used for advertising, what is being shared with the developers, and more.

As Doffman explains, Google Maps has the ability to keep track of data such as location, contacts, data usage and even browsing history.

That might not be a huge surprise but what is more frightening is that Google Maps says this data can be linked back to a personal identity. That means this app has the functionality to build a pretty good profile on its users.

In a statement sent to Forbes, Google said: “Google Maps is designed to protect your information. We provide controls to easily manage your settings and use industry-leading technologies like differential privacy to keep your data safe. We continue to make Google Maps the best and most accurate way to navigate and explore the world—providing rich local business information, best in class search and navigation, and helpful features like the COVID layer and live busyness information.”

Another useful featuring coming to Maps is a three-dimensional city-driving experience. This birds-eye view gives a much clearer picture of the road ahead and should help to make sure you never miss a turn or junction on the motorway.

If you prefer hopping on the bus rather than your car then Apple is improving its public transport directions with maps now showing you when your stop is approaching and when to hop off.

Other features include an improved world map view with the earth now appearing as a globe rather than a flat one-dimensional image.
