Fifth-seeded Georgetown Knocks Off Second-Seeded Lindsey Wilson 2-1, Advancing to Championship Game

COLUMBIA, Ky. – Fifth-seeded Georgetown (Ky.) upset second-seeded Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Sparks Park in Columbia, Ky.

With the win, the Tigers (27-19) advance to the 3:30 p.m. CT Championship Game against top-seeded Campbellsville (Ky.).

After a scoreless opening inning, Lindsey Wilson (38-9) was the team to strike first in the bottom of the second inning. Elizabeth Funk connected on a solo homer over the center-field fence to give the Blue Raiders the 1-0 lead after two innings.

In the top of the third, Georgetown’s Carly Oliver reached base on a double that flew deep into center field with one out on the board. Oliver advanced to third on a stolen base to put the Tigers in prime position to tie the game. Lindsey Mitchell was able to reach base via a walk to give Georgetown runners on the corners with two outs. The Blue Raiders were able to come out unscathed to hold on to their 1-0 lead.

Carissa Summers managed to reach first on a single towards right field to give Lindsey Wilson a runner on base with one out. Lexi Isable connected for a base hit of her own to give the Blue Raiders two runners on first and second. The Tigers were able to force out Summers on third as Desiree Chang connected for a single. Makea-Al Kaluau loaded the bases with a single up the middle, but Georgetown managed to keep the threatening Lindsey Wilson from scoring any runs.

The Tigers captured the lead in the top of the fourth inning, scoring two runs. Madie Sims and Peyton Beger crossed home for Georgetown. Stringing hits together – singles from Sims, Beger, and a double by Annie Campbell made it 1-1. Cassie Rannells singled to advance a runner home to give Georgetown the 2-1 lead. Lindsey Wilson’s offense could not produce a score in the bottom of the inning with runners left on first and third.

In the top of the fifth inning, Lindsey Wilson made a pitching change which proved to be helpful as the Blue Raiders made quick work of the batters in the order. Heading to the sixth, the Blue Raiders’ defense continued to hold Georgetown from adding to its lead, keeping the Tigers at bay. In the bottom of the sixth, Lindsey Wilson moved to a threatening position with runners on first and third, but Georgetown kept the Blue Raiders from scoring.

After the scoreless sixth, Lindsey Wilson was able to continue to fend off the Tigers in the top half of the seventh inning. In the bottom of the seventh, Lindsey Wilson found themselves in prime position to take control as Isable reached on a walk, Chang reached base on a misplayed grounder, and Kaluau reached on a walk to load the bases. Lyric Houston came up to bat for Lindsey Wilson with two outs but was struck out by Megan Brankamp, knocking off the Blue Raiders.

Brankamp (16-8) pitched a complete game for the Tigers and gathered the win with two strikeouts and three walks. Hannah Epperson (7-2) opened the game for Lindsey Wilson and was credited for the loss, pitching for four innings. Annabelle Ramirez threw for the final three innings and struck out four batters. Funk led the Blue Raiders with two hits and an RBI while Annie Campbell gathered two hits and an RBI for the Tigers.

Georgetown advances to the championship game at 3:30 pm CT and are set to face top-seeded Campbellsville at Sparks Park.
