Why winter is the best time to get your feet ready for summer

The winter months are the perfect time to strip toenails bare and give them a break from whatever polish you usually apply, whether regular, shellac, or gel. Opt for a naked pedicure, where your toenails are trimmed, buffed and lathered in cuticle oil in preparation for the polish-filled days of summer.

Every six months, set aside 30 minutes for a podiatrist appointment so you can address issues such as dry, thickened skin, ingrown toenails, corns or sore feet.

“The cold weather has a drying effect on your feet,” says podiatrist Martin Poshoglian. “Lower temperatures and low humidity during the cooler months contribute to drier skin, as does wearing closed-in shoes to keep feet warm. So just as you reach for the hand cream when you notice your hands are feeling dry, you should pay equal attention to your feet.”

Poshoglian suggests using a product such as Neutrogena’s Norwegian Formula Cracked Heel Foot Cream ($28) well before bedtime. Simply apply a dollop to each foot, rub it in well and allow it to be absorbed before climbing into bed. “And most importantly,” Poshoglian says, “no socks! They cause feet to sweat out all the good stuff.”

One stubborn, icky issue no one likes to talk about is toe fungus. Poshoglian explains that part of the problem is that once established, it is very difficult to get rid of. “In most cases, if caught early, it can be resolved. Everyone carries fungi all over their body and fungi love dark, moist areas to proliferate in, particularly feet and toenails. Damaged or lifted nails allow the fungal growth to occur and once it gets going it’s difficult to resolve.”

If toe fungus is an issue, it is advisable to consult a podiatrist who can outline a treatment protocol. For a full-throttle treatment, your GP may prescribe medication.

Corns are another bugbear and arise when focal points of hard skin form due to friction from shoes. Treatment involves shaving the corn back with a scalpel to relieve the pressure.

Once toenails are rested and in peak condition, it’s time for our summer pedicure colour predictions. Our hot picks include a fiery tangerine, Hermès Nail Enamel in Orange Boite ($75) and a neutral, O.P.I Nail Lacquer in My Vampire Is Buff ($21).
