Last year, Apple introduced its first rugged smartwatch, the Apple Watch Ultra. Earlier this year, there were reports indicating that Apple was developing its successor, slated for a 2025 release. However, a recent online report has revealed that the launch of the smartwatch may be postponed to 2026.
According to market research firm TrendForce, Apple has postponed the launch of the Apple Watch Ultra with a microLED display. The report adds that the company has postponed the launch due to manufacturing issues.
This is the second time that Apple has postponed the launch of Apple Watch Ultra. According to Trendforce, the launch of the Apple Watch Ultra successor has been delayed once again and is not expected to be released before the first quarter of 2026. The postponement is reportedly due to challenges associated with high manufacturing costs that Apple needs to address and resolve before initiating mass production.
An earlier online report revealed that in the next edition of the Apple Watch Ultra, Apple is contemplating the inclusion of a 2.1-inch micro-LED display. Along with a larger display, the company is also considering boosting the brightness levels when compared to the existing Apple Watch models with OLED displays. Apple has reportedly invested more than $1 billion on in-house microLED development.
The upcoming Apple Watch Ultra is anticipated to be the first Apple device to feature a microLED display. In contrast to the current Apple Watch Ultra, which utilizes standard OLED technology, the implementation of MicroLED brings numerous advantages similar to OLED, while also introducing some notable enhancements.
Benefits of microLED display

Also, In contrast to OLED technology, microLEDs present significantly reduced risk of screen burn-in, and they have the potential for a longer overall lifespan. MicroLED displays also offer contrast improvements and faster response time. Along with this, they also deliver better and brighter colour reproduction.
