Pvt hosps see post-COVID revenue rise, set sights on infra expansion – ET HealthWorld
Kolkata: Private hospitals in Kolkata have seen revenues rise sharply over the last one year after a lull in earnings and a dip in bed occupancy during the pandemic years, leading several of them to launch expansions or revive projects that had been shelved due to COVID. Revenues have soared by an average of 20 per cent-40 per cent in comparison to the pre-COVID period. The city is set to have around 500 more beds across five private hospitals by the end of 2023.
AMRI Hospitals, which is now in the final stages of a merger-acquisition process that will make it a part of a national chain, has seen a 45 per cent rise in revenue in 2022-23 from 2019-20. A number of factors have contributed to higher occupancy, leading to a revenue swell post-COVID, said AMRI CEO Rupak Barua.
“First, there was a huge backlog of deferred surgeries and treatment that were done over the last one year. Post-COVID health complications, too, have led to a higher footfall in our OPDs and consultations have increased,” said Barua.
Peerless Hospital has seen a 20 per cent revenue increase between 2019-20 and 2022-23. It will soon add 100 beds to its existing building while construction has begun for a new building that will be spread across 3,70,000 sq ft. “Resumption of surgeries, that are our main revenue generating source, has led to the revenue growth. COVID had led to a complete suspension of surgeries that had made earnings dip drastically,” said Peerless Hospital CEO Sudipta Mitra.
RN Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences (RTIICS) has started expanding outpatient departments, daycare areas and operation theatres and setting up radiation oncology services. It is also adding a cathlab and high-end radiology equipment to cater to the increased demand.
“Healthcare industry has gained some semblance of stability and consistency in 2022-23 after ups and downs in the last two years due to COVID. The pent-up demand, both from domestic and international segments, have resulted in the volume and spectrum of work going up,” said Narayana Hospitals zonal head R Venkatesh.
Woodlands Hospital, too, has seen a revenue growth ‘in line with the industry growth’ after the COVID impact. “The increase is mainly on account of resumption of elective surgeries, non-COVID medical treatment and some international patients returning to the hospital,” said Rupali Basu, managing director & CEO, Woodlands Multispeciality Hospital.
Charnock Hospital has seen a 22 per cent revenue jump between 2019-20 and 2022-23. It is planning to expand. “The good work that we did during COVID made our brand stronger and helped boost our occupancy,” said managing director Prashant Sharma.
Medica Superspecialty Hospital has not only recovered the shortfall in revenue from COVID times but have registered an increased footfall of 10 per cent across all specialties, resulting in an additional revenue in 2022-23, according to co-founder & joint managing director Ayanabh Deb Gupta.
