Sundar Pichai: Here’s what Google CEO Sundar Pichai has to say on ex-Googlers joining ChatGPT maker OpenAI – Times of India

Google has been seen as playing catch up in the industry when it comes to releasing generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology-powered tools. But the company CEO Sundar Pichai has, time and again, pointed out that Google’s aim is not to be the first but to get things right. Meanwhile, OpenAI, the company that developed ChatGPT, has made inroads in the industry. But little did people know, the team at the Microsoft-backed company comprises former Google employees, and Pichai seems to not have a problem with that.
In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Pichai was asked whether he is worried that Google researchers left the company to start rivals or to join others like OpenAI. He said that this [Googlers leaving company] is healthy.

“Googlers have left to create over 2,000 startups, last I counted, and I think that’s great. Some of them are cloud customers down the line for us. Some of them come back. I think it’s healthy,” he replied.

Over 12 ex-Googlers in OpenAI
Earlier this year, a report by The Platformer claimed that OpenAI hired a lot of Google researchers to work on AI tools way before the launch of ChatGPT. Barret Zoph, Liam Fedus, Luke Metz, Jacob Menick, and Rapha Gontijo Lopes were claimed to have joined OpenAI from Google.
In 2017, Google researchers published a seminal paper introducing AI technology. OpenAI’s ChatGPT is built on that technology.

Pichai also noted that Google’s Bard chatbot is better in some areas and lags behind in others. “I view this as a very, very early time,” he was quoted as saying. Pichai also rejected the idea of existential competition and termed the situation as “a competitive moment”. He also expects Google to be an active publisher of research work in this field.
When asked about Bard being presented as an experiment and the potential for these experiments to be a permanent part of Search, the Google CEO said they will be part of the mainstream search experience but highlighted that “a few things we want to make sure we get right.”
“People come to us and type queries like, ‘What’s the Tylenol dosage for my 3-year-old?’ There’s no room to get that wrong,” he added.
