Samsung using EV tech to improve Galaxy S24 series’ battery life: Report
Samsung developing new battery tech for smartphones, tablets
The new battery technology is being developed by Samsung SDI, the R&D wing at the Korean tech company which is responsible for battery technologies. Samsung SDI is on a quest to develop a new battery that could offer more energy storage capacity in the same footprint (via The Elec). The company aims to achieve this by deriving the battery stacking technology that is currently in use for making Gen 5 batteries for EVs. This new technology, when miniaturised for use in smartphones and tablets, would be able to expand capacity by as much as 10 percent within the same footprint.
To achieve this, Samsung SDI has partnered with two Chinese organisations that will be working in a joint venture with the company and will develop the new battery technology for application in personal electronics. The company aims to use its advanced facilities at its Cheonan, South Korea plant for stacking batteries. The partnered Chinese firms are also reportedly setting up offices in South Korea to work in tandem with Samsung SDI. Samsung has also set up a pilot production line at its factory in Tianjin using Shenzhen Yinghe Tech-sourced equipment.
The Samsung Galaxy S24 flagship series is likely to benefit from the new battery technology and other high-end smartphones and tablets from the company could follow suit. The Samsung Galaxy S24 series is also rumoured to get a faster GPU than the upcoming iPhone 15 and could get a new 144Hz high refresh rate display.
