Yet another liver transplant surgery done by outside doctor at AIIMS-Delhi

NEW DELHI: Another liver transplant surgery of a 52-year-old man from Delhi was conducted at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Wednesday by a doctor from another institution. The transplant was done on the day the TOI highlighted how AIIMS has been relying on doctors from other medical institutions, including Medanta-The Medicity, for these procedures since 2016.

Gujarat University of Transplantation Sciences vice-chancellor Dr Pranjal Modi was called by the institute for the liver transplantation despite the fact that all faculty members, including the head of the department, gastrointestinal surgery, Prof Peush Sahni and the second-in-command of the department, Dr Sujoy Pal, were available in the institute. This is the second surgery done by Dr Modi in less than 48 hours.

Dr Modi arrived in Delhi on Tuesday night to conduct a liver transplantation after the family of a 38-year-old brain dead man agreed to donate his organs. The surgery lasted for about 11 hours and after finishing it, Dr Modi returned to Ahmedabad on the same day.

Several doctors expressed sadness on Twitter about the institute’s alumni having become successful liver transplantation surgeons and training more doctors in various parts of the country but AIIMS still not able to develop a successful programme. The total number of liver transplants done at AIIMS till now is equal to what some private hospitals, including Medanta, are doing in a couple of months. The institute has not done a single “live” liver transplantation. However, AIIMS Delhi has one of the oldest gastrointestinal surgery departments in India.

Giving details about the brain dead patient, doctors said that Niranjan Singh had arrived at the AIIMS trauma centre on March 19 after he sustained severe head injuries due to a road accident.

Despite all efforts, they could not save him and declared him brain dead. Singh’s liver was transplanted to a 52-year-old man from Delhi who had been waiting for the organ for the past two years. While one kidney was also given to AIIMS for transplantation into a woman (42) and another kidney was transported to Army Hospital (Research and Referral) for transplantation into a man (25) and heart valves have been preserved.

Singh’s cousin Surya Pratap Singh told TOI that his brother, who was working in a private manufacturing unit in Faridabad, was returning home in Delhi’s Mithapur when a two-wheeler hit him from behind and he fell on the ground and injured himself. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment but doctors referred him to AIIMS. After his death, the family was requested to donate his organs.
