88% married Indians say excessive smartphone usage is hurting their relationship: Study – Times of India
Vivo announced the findings of its fourth edition of the Switch Off study titled ‘Smartphones and their impact on human relationships 2022’. The study found that 67% of Indians confessed to being on their phones even while they were spending time with their spouse.
Overindulgence in smartphones leads to psychological changes
The study found that 70% of people get irritated if their spouse interrupts them while they are engrossed in their smartphones. Moreover, 69% of respondents confessed not being attentive enough while conversing with their spouse.
With excessive smartphone usage, 66% of respondents feel that their relationship with their better halves has weakened. About 89% of respondents said that they spend less time engaging in relaxed conversation with their spouse than possible, claims the study, which was conducted in association with Cybermedia Research (CMR).
People willing to change
The findings of the Vivo study also paint a good picture when it comes to understanding the problem. While agreeing on the fact that in-person engagements with their partners are more relaxing, 84% of respondents wish to spend more time with their spouse.
“People are accepting the problems and are willing to change as 88% of respondents agreed that increased usage of smartphones is hurting their relationship with their spouses,” the study noted. Furthermore, 90% of people want to devote more leisure time to meaningful conversations with their spouses.
How smartphones are impacting people’s lives
The findings of the study suggest that around 84% of people agree that “it has become a part of their body.”
While technological advances have allowed people to be more productive and communicate easily, 72% of respondents agreed that they sometimes are so ingrained in their smartphones that they lose track of their surroundings.
Furthermore, 58% of people agreed that they use smartphones while eating meals, 86% of respondents say that the phone is the last thing they see before hitting the bed, and a whopping 60% of people use smartphones while sitting with family.
