5-for Yash Thakur grounds Himachal, guides Vidarbha off to a flier in Vijay Hazare opener | Cricket News – Times of India
NAGPUR: Vidarbha’s promising pacer Yash Thakur is silently carving a niche for himself since his debut in 2017. Whenever the right-arm pacer got a go, he has been testing the batsmen with variations that are confidently executed. Thakur used the similar template to baffle Himachal in the Vijay Hazare Trophy opener on Wednesday.
The former India under-19 pacer captured his first 5-wicket haul in List-A format and set the tone for Vidarbha with a 7-wicket win at Dadoji Konddev Stadium, Thane.
Once Himachal failed to deal with Thakur’s (9-1-53-5) variations and left-arm spinner Aditya Sarwate’s (10-3-19-1) economical spell, the course of Vidarbha’s victory was completed by other former Indian under-19 players — Atharva Taide (64 off 59b) and Yash Rathod (76 n.o off 78b) in the second essay.
It was not an easy wicket to bat on as the ball was holding up a bit but both the southpaws — opener Taide and No.4 Rathod — showed enough control while chasing 214. Taide got off to a flying start with some crackling on-the-rise drives and powerful pull shots.
Though Vidarbha lost skipper Faiz Fazal (23) and Ganesh Satish (3) within 14 balls, Taide and new man Rathod did not let Himachal get an upper hand. While Taide stepped down at will, Rathod kept chipping with singles to unsettle Himachal attack comprising two left-arm spinners — Mayank Dagar and Aakash Vasisht. Both Dagar and Vasisht could not replicate what Sarwate did on the same track in the middle overs. The period proved to be the deciding factor in the end.
When Sarwate was choking runs, Faiz brought Thakur into the attack. The pacer used his experience with Punjab Kings, with whom he spent the last IPL season, with authority.
The 22-year-old literally bowled what the team required. Rather than going full throttle, he showed maturity and rolled out typical limited over variations. He captured two wickets on slower ones, as many on his patent line in the corridor of uncertainty, while a sharp bouncer gave him another scalp.
When Vidarbha bowlers were on the money after opting to field, wicketkeeper Jitesh Sharma was having a great day behind the stumps. He captured five catches of which three came off Thakur’s bowling.
Thakur’s effort was nicely complemented by Taide, Rathod and vice-captain Akshay Wadkar (44 n.o off 59b). Taide had a 60-run stand with Faiz. Later, he was involved in a 50-run union with Rathod. Post that, Rathod had the company of Wadkar, who is known for his grittiness. They drove the rivals out with their unbroken 95-run partnership.
